A recent article by Bill Fulton about an emerging urban form. In it he sees a future of pedestrian friendly, higher density, mixed use communities many urban planners have been working toward. The twist here though, is that this new form includes single family housing and the automobile, the two things that most thought were incompatible with these new communities. We see this approach as number one more realistic, and secondly, potentially more approvable. One could argue that some of this stuff is happening gradually anyway, but Fulton actually identifies it and gives us a vision and a goal to work towards. The key will be all of us, planners, the public, and jurisdictions to all understand and share that vision.
